Librarian’s Bookshelf: All UMHS library books are now overdue.
The library is gathering all materials back before summer school starts. Over 122 books are still out! So if your student has a book stamped “UMHS Library”, it’s overdue. All materials must be returned by Friday, May 22 to avoid a $5.00 over-the-summer per item fine.
Thanks for your help.
Librarian’s Bookshelf: Teen fun at the El Dorado County Library this summer
Our local county library is launching a teen poetry contest this summer. Poems will consist of only six words. The contest is called the “Six-Word Memoir Project.” An example would be “Born in California Then nothing happened.” Click on this link for more information. http://www.eldoradolibrary.org/ Or call Krystal Owens at 621-5333.
The Summer Reading Club at the county library always needs lots of teen volunteers. Please call the children’s librarian, Jan Robbins, at 621-5547 for more information. Volunteering is fun and it looks great on resumes and scholarship applications.

UNION MINE HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETIC INFORMATION
As the school year comes to an end, so does our Spring Sports season. JV and Varsity Baseball had their last game Friday at Christian Brothers, only to fall 5 – 6 at the JV level, and 2 – 8 at Varsity. Varsity kept a competitive edge half way through the season, but ended 7 – 11 in League standings. JV ended their League season 6 – 12. Thanks to our teams for their exciting games!
Boys Golf made it as far as the sub-sections tournament but none of our players qualified to move on. Girls soccer also had a tough season and did not advance to playoffs. Although Varsity Softball ended their final League game against Christian Brothers with a 10 – 0 win, they did not move on to playoffs.
Nine of our Varsity Boys and Girls Swim team members qualified to compete at the Sections Trials this week at Tokay High School in Lodi. Keri Schnaidt, Riley Heryet, Quinn Beattie, and Kirstie Sanew will compete Thursday, while the Varsity Boys team of Coleman Goode, Nick Hood, A. J. Hull, Dan Levine, and Morgan Lloyd will compete on Friday. The finals are on Saturday and we’re hoping all nine move on to compete then!
Boys Tennis finished 6 – 6 in League, with 95% of the team earning a 3.0 or better GPA. At the end of the season, the boys hosted a Mixed Doubles tournament inviting the fall girls team to come out and play. It was a festive event for both teams!
Track and Field is competing today, Wednesday, at the SVC League Trials at Cordova High. Those who qualify will compete Friday, and if times and distances are good, they will move on to compete at sub-sections next week, May 20th and 22nd, at Bella Vista. As always, we wish our D-Backs the best in personal times and records today!
Varsity Boys Volleyball made playoffs, and got their first round victory last Thursday against Rio Linda in three straight games, 25 – 11, 25 – 11, and 25 15. Last night they played in the second round at Monterey Trail in Elk Grove, only to drop in three games. This was the first year of boys volleyball playoffs, and we’re proud of how well our team did to compete against much larger schools!
The 2009-10 Athletic Packets are here and available for students to come and pick up and fill out. Fall sports tryouts will begin after school on August 10th, and most tryouts will continue that whole first week. Students must have at least a 2.0 GPA at the end of this grading period ending May 22nd to be eligible. Should your student’s grades fall below the 2.0 GPA, it is strongly recommended they attend Summer School to maintain their eligibility. Students are encouraged to turn in the 09-10 Athletic Packet before the school year ends in order to be “cleared” by the first day of school in August. Our office will be open until Friday, May 29th, and staff will not return until Monday, August 3rd. We suggest students and parents take care of this before the summer break begins. Should you have any questions regarding Athletics here at Union Mine, please call our Athletic Office at 621- 4003, ext 4125, or call our Athletic Director, Dave Johnson, at 621-0392. Go Diamondbacks!

UNION MINE HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETIC INFORMATION
JV and Varsity Baseball suffered some losses last week. Monday, April 27th at home our guys dropped to Ponderosa. The next game in the series was Wednesday, April 29th, at Ponderosa, where Varsity fell by one unlucky run, 3 – 4. JV also lost by one, 5 – 6. Friday our teams were scheduled to play “under the lights” up at El Dorado but Mother Nature supplied so much rain the games were cancelled. Today at home our guys will host Christian Brothers. Friday will be their final game at Christian Brothers. Let’s hope the weather holds this week!
Boys Golf played their final match last Thursday against Ponderosa, shooting 224 to their 206. Monday, both Justin and Kyle Listar qualified to play in the subsections tournament at Cameron Park. Despite the fact it’s our home course, the brothers shot 86 and 80, respectively, short of qualifying cut-off to move on to the Masters Tournament on May 11th. Congratulations to our Boys Golf team for taking 5th Place in the final SVC League Tournament on April 27th.
JV and Varsity Girls Soccer teams finished their final League season games last week. Monday both levels lost to Oak Ridge, but JV took the win on Wednesday at Cordova, 3 – 0. Varsity played the later game under the lights but couldn’t get a goal, dropping 0 – 3 to the Lady Lancers. The girls soccer “end-of-season” banquet will be Wednesday, May 13th, 5:30 – 8:30, in the Cafeteria. Today after school both the Varsity girls soccer team will play the Varsity Boys Soccer team to culminate the year!
JV and Varsity Softball had three games the last week in April. Tuesday the 28th we hosted Vista, where JV tied and Varsity won, 8 – 1. Wednesday Bear River’s Varsity made the long trip over, and managed to get the win, 1 – 4. On Thursday our girls traveled to “Bruinville,” where both levels lost. Today Varsity travels to Christian Brothers for their final game of the season at 4:15. JV gets the “bye” due to CBS ending their JV team early.
Congratulations to the following D-Back Swimmers who qualified and will compete at the Sections meet at Tokay High School in Lodi on May 14th and 15th: Quinn Beattie, Riley Heryet, Kirstie Sanew, Keri Schnaidt, Coleman Goode, Nick Hood, A.J. Hull, Dan Levine, and Morgan Lloyd. The Varsity Girls swim on Thursday while the Varsity Boys will compete on Friday. The finals will be Saturday, May 16th, also at Tokay. Good luck to all our D-Backs!
Our Boys Tennis team just finished competing last week and this week in the SVC League Singles and Doubles tournament at Broadstone in Folsom. Our guys played hard, but we didn’t have any one move on to the Super Singles or Super Doubles. This Saturday, May 9th, will be their “end-of-season” swim and bar-b-que party at Coach Schnaidt’s crib, 4 – 7 pm. Flyers with directions to the house were given to the team members. Extras are available at the front counter in the front office at Union Mine. Congratulations to our team members and thanks for a well played season!
Our D-Back Track and Field team will host their final League meet today after school against Galt at 3:30. We’re hoping the weather holds and the sun breaks through just enough to dry the track and make for a great meet. It’s free, so come by and cheer our track and field team members to setting new records and winning the meet. Next Wednesday and Friday our team competes at the SVC Trials and Finals at Cordova High School. Good luck to them all!
JV and Varsity Boys Volleyball finished their League season the last week of April, playing El Camino on Monday and winning. Tuesday they hosted Ponderosa, but both levels lost. Wednesday, April 29th, our guys hosted El Dorado, where JV won in three games, as well as Varsity winning in three straight, 25 – 7, 25 – 20, and 25 – 14. Thursday, April 30th, our teams won at Rio Americano. Varsity clinched the 3rd Place finish in League to earn a berth in the Varsity Boys Volleyball playoffs beginning this Thursday, May 7th, 7 pm at Rio Linda. Also, congratulations to our Senior Andy McCrory for winning the SVC “MVP” award in Varsity Boys Volleyball, as well as our Head Coach, Mike Yates, for “Coach of the Year” Award! Congratulations to our D-Backs and good luck as they play this week in the opening round of Division II CIF playoffs!

UNION MINE HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETIC INFORMATION
Varsity and JV Baseball teams seem to be riding the roller coaster of wins and losses the past few games. Both teams were elated with their wins at Vista del Lago last Friday, 1- 0 for Varsity and 10 – 5 for JV. However, they dropped to the “Eagles” when they came to UMHS on Monday, 3 – 4 and 2 -12, respectively. Yesterday our D-Backs played at Cordova where both Varsity and JV won. Varsity squeezed out the win, 6 – 5, while JV’s score was 10 – 8. Tomorrow both teams play Cordova again here at home.
Varsity Boys Golf played Cordova at Rancho Cordova Golf Course Tuesday where our team lost by 3 strokes, 193 – 190. Today they host Vista del Lago at Cameron Park. We’re looking for good shooting and a possible win today from our D-Backs. Good luck, guys!
Varsity and JV Girls Soccer had two home games this past Monday and Wednesday. Monday they faced the “Lady Bruins” of Ponderosa, where Varsity lost 0 – 7 and JV fell 1 – 6. Yesterday they battled tough against Galt, but in spite of two goals by Varsity players Shannon McCrea and Ashley Reese, we didn’t get the victory. JV also had two goals by Morgan Lefebreve and Kassi Hoelscher, but Galt went on to win, 2 – 4. Monday, April 27th, will be their last home game of the season hosting Oak Ridge. The games are free, so come and cheer our Ladies to a victory. Varsity begins at 4 pm, with JV to follow around 6 pm.
Varsity and JV Softball had a real tough game Tuesday hosting Oak Ridge. Varsity lost, 0 – 5, while JV dropped 1 – 9. Today Varsity travels to Cordova to play the “Lady Lancers” at 4:15. JV will not play today because Cordova doesn’t have a JV Softball team. Next Tuesday our Ladies meet up against Vista at home. Everyone is invited to attend and show your support of our Lady D-Back Softball teams!
Swim Team had a make-up meet Tuesday this week against Galt. Varsity Boys were able to get the victory, 105-62, but our Varsity girls couldn’t get the win, falling 67 – 99. Let’s hear it for Junior swimmer Riley Heryet and her school record breaking performance in the 100 free! Nice work, Riley! Next Friday and Saturday, May 1st and 2nd, our D-Back Swim team travels to Vista del Lago for the SVC League meet. We hope all our team members set new personal bests at the meet!
Boys Tennis had their ups and downs this week, with a big loss to Ponderosa on Monday, 2 – 7. Yesterday hosting Galt, all our singles players and doubles teams won their matches, making a clean sweep, 9 – 0! Monday the boys will have one more League match at home, and then they move into the SVC League matches on Thursday, April 30th. Think positive thoughts for our tennis team!
Track and Field competed at Vista del Lago yesterday. Although we didn’t win the overall meet, we had stellar performances by some of our Track and Field team members. Beau Bridge, at JV, won 4 events: the 400, 200, high jump, and 4 x 4 relay. Dan Schwarzberg won 3 Varsity events: the 100, 200 and high jump. Hannah Dewater won the 300 Varsity girls hurdles. Finally, Hayden Parker not only won the Varsity shot and discus, he also set 2 personal records in his efforts! Congratulations to all our athletes and their desire to compete for our Track and Field team!
Our JV and Varsity Boys Volleyball teams are near the end of their season, as well as Varsity is preparing for a shot at the Varsity Boys Volleyball playoffs coming up May 7th. Varsity won at Christian Brothers Tuesday, 25 – 11, 25 – 8 and 25 – 7. Tonight Varsity hosts Vista at 7 pm. JV didn’t play Tuesday, nor will they play tonight because both CBS and Vista does not have a JV team. Monday Varsity only travels to El Camino for a game at 7 pm, followed by games on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday all next week. It’s a busy end of the season schedule for boys volleyball, but they’re just trying to fit in all their League matches before playoffs begin. Good luck to our boys!

Librarian’s Bookshelf: Grolier Online Encyclopedias The library will have a new reference suite of online databases from Grolier beginning in June. You may take a peek at the Grolier databases by going to the URL: http://go.grolier.comFor logging on, the ID is groliergo and the password is lesson. This will allow you to access all of the Grolier databases. The UMHS library is subscribing to the following three: 1. La Nueva Enciclopedia Cumbre. This database is for both native Spanish speakers and for beginning to intermediate students learning Spanish. “Aula de Espanol” contains recipes, festivals, grammar, and vocabulary as well as country information. The “Cumbre” is a complete encyclopedia in the Spanish language.2. Grolier Multimedia Encyclopedia. This database is geared toward middle school through high school students and contains over 500,000 links to articles. It contains an interactive atlas that I’ve just used with a UMHS special ed class, and is loaded with visuals, photographs, short videos and interactive maps. 3. Encyclopedia Americana. This encyclopedia is aimed toward higher level students, including those in college. Articles are in depth and include links to EBSCO magazine articles and scholarly websites. This database should be popular with students doing advanced research.

UNION MINE HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETIC INFORMATION
Varsity Baseball had two back-to-back games this week, Tuesday and Wednesday, against Oak Ridge. Here at home Tuesday our D-backs lost 2 -7, but yesterday celebrated the victory at Oak Ridge, 5 – 3. JV tried to get the wins on both days as well, but lost at home 7 – 13, and 2 – 6 on the road. Tomorrow our guys play Vista del Lago in Folsom. We’re hoping both levels get a win!
Yesterday Varsity Boys Golf had their hands full with Christian Brothers on our home course, dropping 238 – 207. Today they play Oak Ridge at Cameron Park, so let’s hear it for a victory on our home turf. Hit par today, D-Backs!
Varsity Girls Soccer is experiencing shortness of goals, since the games they lost this week were 0 – 4 and 0 – 5 respectively against Vista del Lago and CBS. JV lost on Monday against Vista, but yesterday at Christian Brothers our younger squad pulled out the win, 2 – 1! Next week they play two home games, Ponderosa on Monday and Galt on Wednesday. Come and cheer our girls to victory. Games are free and Varsity starts at 4, with JV games to follow around 6 pm.
JV and Varsity Softball have their first game after Spring Break at home today against Galt. Their games begin at 4:15. Admission is free, so we’re inviting you all to come and show your support for our Ladies. Varsity will play this Saturday in Folsom’s annual Bulldog Classic Softball Tournament, and then next Tuesday our girls will host Oak Ridge.
As of press time, we don’t have final results from yesterday’s swim meet against Ponderosa at “Bruinville.” We do know that the meet our D-Backs had before Spring Break against Christian Brothers at Union Mine was a victorious one for us. Varsity Boys won, 105 – 49, while Varsity Girls won, 93 – 73. The make-up meet against Galt, originally scheduled on March 4th, has been moved to next Tuesday, April 21, 4 pm at Union Mine. Admission to swim meets is also FREE, so stop by and check out our D-Back Swim teams!
Boys Tennis had a great win against Vista del Lago on Monday, 6 – 3, but yesterday’s matches at Christian Brothers didn’t quite go our way. In hoping for some matches to swing towards D-Back luck, we lost the overall contest, 4 – 5. Monday our guys will host Ponderosa at 4 pm, and Tuesday we’ll have another Mixed Doubles Tournament, where our current boys players will team up with our girls tennis team members from the Fall season. It’s always a hit with the students, and matches begin at 3:15. Come and watch!
Yesterday our Track and Field team hosted the “Bruins” of Ponderosa. Our Frosh/Soph team literally “ran away” with a victory, 77 – 54, with memorable performances and first place finishes by Beau Bridge in the 200, 400 M and High jump events, and Cory Gutierrez in the 800 and 2-mile race. Other first place Varsity finishers were Hayden Parker in the Shot and Discus, Dan Schwarzberg in the 100 and 200 M, and Sierra Davies in the 2-mile. Friday our team is heading to Del Oro’s annual Invitational meet beginning at 1 pm. Bus will leave our campus at 11:10. We hope our team members set new personal best records!
For the past few weeks, JV and Varsity Boys Volleyball have been on a victory roll, easily defeating Rio Americano, El Camino, and El Dorado this past Tuesday. Last night, however, our luck ran out in the winning odds \down at Oak Ridge. JV played hard but lost their match in two straight games. Varsity showed fine moments of fluid play, and put the scare into the “Trojans” in that first game, 26 – 28. Despite their hard efforts, our D-Backs went on to drop the next two in close games, 22 – 25 and 17 – 25. This Saturday they play at El Dorado’s Tournament, then face Christian Brothers next Tuesday in Sacramento. In addition, due to boys volleyball playoffs beginning May 7th, the last two games scheduled on May 5th and May 7th have been moved to Wednesday, April 22nd and Wednesday, April 29th, respectively. El Camino will host on the 22nd while we host El Dorado on the 29th. Our Varsity boys are hoping for a bid at playoffs this year! Good luck, D-Backs!
Union Mine will host the “Incoming Frosh/8th Grade Parent Athletic Information Night” on Monday, May 4th, 6:30 pm in the West Gym. Information about athletics for the upcoming year, 2009-10, will be available, as well as information about “Physical Night.” Mark these dates and times on your calendar now!
